Claude Code — For CIOs & CEOs
3 minutes. What you need to know about Claude Code before your next meeting with your CTO or CIO.
What it is (in one sentence)
Claude Code is an AI coding agent from Anthropic that runs in your developers' terminal, IDE, desktop app, or browser — it reads code, writes code, runs tests, and helps with code review, under a permission system that decides what it may do without asking.
This is not a chatbot. It's a production tool.
Why it matters to you
Your competitors are already using it. AI coding tools are mainstream: the Stack Overflow 2025 Developer Survey found that a large majority of developers use or plan to use them. The question is no longer "should we adopt?" — it's "are we doing it right?"
The advantage comes from structure, not from the tool itself. A team with a shared configuration, documented conventions, and enforced security guardrails gets more consistent results than a team where each developer improvises. The competitive edge comes from organizational discipline, not from the license. No credible public benchmark puts an exact multiplier on this, so measure it in your own codebase.
The risk of doing nothing is greater than the risk of adoption. Your developers are probably already using it informally. Without a clear policy, you have security exposure without the benefit of measurable productivity gains.
The numbers
| Indicator | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Team plan seats | Standard $20/seat/month (annual) or $25 monthly; Premium $100/seat/month (annual) or $125 monthly, with 5x the usage of Standard; 2 to 150 seats | claude.com/pricing |
| Enterprise plan | $20/seat/month billed annually, plus usage billed at API rates | claude.com/pricing |
| Individual plans | Pro $20/month ($17 billed annually); Max from $100/month | claude.com/pricing |
| Typical Claude Code usage cost | About $13 per developer per active day, $150–250 per developer per month; under $30 per active day for 90% of users | Claude Code costs |
| Productivity gain | Measure it yourself: PRs per user, PRs with vs. without Claude Code | Claude Code analytics |
| Risk of unstructured adoption | Security exposure + quality debt | — |
Plans and prices change. Confirm them on the pricing page before budgeting.
3 questions to ask your CTO
-
"Are our developers already using it?" — The answer is probably yes. The real question is: with what configuration, what rules, and what level of traceability?
-
"Do we have a policy on what can be sent to the AI?" — Claude Code runs locally, but your prompts and the file content Claude reads are sent to Anthropic's API. Under commercial terms (Team, Enterprise, API) Anthropic does not train on this data, and retention is 30 days by default; zero data retention is available to qualified Enterprise accounts. On personal Free, Pro, and Max accounts, training is a user setting. This is manageable, but only if a policy exists.
-
"Who is our internal champion?" — The teams that succeed have a tech lead or senior engineer dedicated to structuring adoption. This doesn't require a new headcount — it takes a fraction of the time of someone already in place.
What it actually costs
Licenses: for a team, Team or Enterprise seats rather than personal Max accounts. Budget more for a coding seat than a chat seat: Anthropic reports about $150–250 per developer per month across enterprise deployments, and heavy users should be on Premium seats or usage credits.
Training: one structured day is enough for a team of 10 to 15 people. A free Brown Bag Lunch (1h) lets you test team interest before committing to anything.
Doing nothing: your developers use unvetted tools or personal accounts, with no data policy and no audit trail. That scenario carries more risk than structured adoption.
What you can delegate (and to whom)
| Decision | You | Your CTO/CIO | External expert |
|---|---|---|---|
| License budget | ✅ | — | — |
| Data policy / GDPR | ✅ validation | ✅ drafting | ✅ audit |
| Team configuration and managed settings | — | ✅ | ✅ if needed |
| Training | — | ✅ identification | ✅ if structured |
| Results measurement | ✅ validation | ✅ definition | — |
Vendor due diligence
Anthropic publishes its security certifications (SOC 2 Type 2 report, ISO 27001 certificate) in the Anthropic Trust Center. Request them there during vendor review. Admins can enforce organization-wide rules with managed settings and monitor usage through the analytics dashboard and OpenTelemetry export.
Concrete next step
Option 1 — You want to understand before deciding: ask your CTO for a 30-minute demo on a real use case from your codebase.
Option 2 — You want to move fast: a free Brown Bag Lunch (1h, in-person or remote) covers the fundamentals for your executive and technical teams simultaneously. Free — done for the networking and the challenge.
Option 3 — You already have teams using it: a configuration audit (half-day) identifies active risks and optimization opportunities.
