Claude Cowork Guide
Complete guide to Claude's desktop assistant for knowledge workers and small businesses. Invoices, quotes, follow-ups, prospecting — automated without coding.
⚡ Quick Start
1. Open Cowork
Open Claude (desktop app, web, or mobile), select Cowork in the message box, and connect a folder when asked. Local file access, browser use, and computer use need the Claude Desktop app open and connected. In newer versions Chat and Cowork share one message box, and on some plans the Cowork option may not appear yet.
2. First workflow
mkdir -p ~/Cowork-Workspace/{input,output}
# Add files to input/, then:"Organize the files in ~/Cowork-Workspace/input/ by type"
3. Go further
- Cheatsheet — Print this
- Complete guide — 10 min
Prerequisites:
- Subscription: a paid plan: Pro ($20/mo, or $17/mo billed annually), Max (from $100/mo), Team, or Enterprise. Not available on Free. See claude.com/pricing
- Platform: Claude Desktop for macOS and Windows (latest version); Cowork is also reachable from claude.ai on the web and the iOS/Android apps, with plan limits per surface
- Connection: an active internet connection throughout the session
Why this guide?
The problem: Official docs are dense. Tutorials get outdated quickly. You need ready-to-use workflows, not feature lists.
This guide: 28 business workflows, 70 copy-paste prompts, plugin and skills documentation, practical examples. Workflow and prompt counts refer to the linked community repository, which may lag official product changes. For current product facts, see the official Cowork help article.

Plugins and connectors
Plugins bundle skills, connectors, and sub-agents. They are saved to your account and work in chat, Claude Code, and Cowork. Connectors link Claude to external tools; manage them from the "+" menu or Customize > Connectors. Team and Enterprise admins can restrict whether connectors are auto-approved. Some features are desktop-only, such as plugins that use local MCP servers. The available catalog changes, so browse it in the app rather than relying on a fixed list.
Approval modes
Pick the mode from the selector in the task:
- Manual — Claude asks permission for each action
- Auto — Claude reviews actions for safety and blocks unsafe ones (uses more of your usage limit)
- Skip — Claude runs without asking or checks; use only for tasks you fully trust
Scheduled tasks
Type /schedule in a task, or use the Scheduled sidebar item. Scheduled tasks run in the cloud, so your computer does not need to be awake.

🔑 Golden Rules
- Review the plan before approval — Cowork proposes, you decide. Prefer Manual mode until you trust a workflow
- Dedicated folder only — Claude can read and write only in folders you connect, so never connect Documents, Desktop, or system folders
- No credentials — Keep passwords and API keys out of connected folders and prompts
- Verify sources — Downloaded files and web pages may contain hidden instructions (prompt injection)
- Check network settings — Some community reports describe VPN conflicts with the sandbox; if tasks fail on a VPN, try without it. Network egress settings do not apply to web fetch, web search, MCPs, or Claude in Chrome
- Back up before deletion — Claude asks explicit permission before permanently deleting files, but keep a backup of anything important
- Avoid regulated workloads — Anthropic advises against using Cowork for regulated workloads
See Security Guide for detailed practices.
About
This guide exists because official docs are dense and tutorials get outdated quickly.
Philosophy: Practical over theoretical. Real workflows, not feature lists.
Focus: Small businesses and knowledge workers worldwide.

Privacy
Cowork sends prompts, files Claude reads, and results to Anthropic's servers. Cloud tasks run on Anthropic infrastructure and are saved to your account.
| Account type | Training | Retention |
|---|---|---|
| Free, Pro, Max (consumer) | Your choice in privacy settings | 5 years if training is on, 30 days if off |
| Team, Enterprise (commercial) | Not used for training by default | 30 days standard; zero data retention only for qualified accounts, set per organization |
Deleting a task removes it from your history immediately and from backend storage within 30 days. Team and Enterprise owners can disable web search and Claude in Chrome. Cowork activity is not captured in Audit Logs, the Compliance API, or Data Exports, which matters for compliance teams.
Action: Review your privacy controls
Current Limitations
Platform: macOS and Windows desktop, plus web and mobile with plan limits
Known issues and limits:
- Usage is metered in a rolling five-hour window plus a weekly window, shared with Claude chat and Claude Code. Multi-step tasks use much more than quick questions; check Settings > Usage
- Task sessions cannot be shared, though individual artifacts can be
- Cloud execution is in beta on Team and Enterprise
- Community reports mention VPN and sandbox conflicts; unverified in official docs
- Cowork launched as a research preview in early 2026 and is now part of the main Claude experience. Expect the interface to keep changing
